Knitted Fabric A structured fabric formed by horizontally interlocking loops of yarn, which are formed into individual rows of loops and crochets vertically with the corresponding loop in the next horizontal row.
Another highlight is that the fabric can be produced by hand using two knitting needles and a ball of yarn. The loom can produce flat or tubular fabric depending on the type. The loops are interlocked, the warp threads are called Wales and the weft threads are called Courses. If weaved correctly, Wales and Courses intersect at a 90-degree angle. The texture of tricot fabric is quite different when compared to other fabrics. With the structure of warp fibers linked together, tricot fabric offers soft characteristics but still retains a certain stiffness when forming.
The loop-like structure of the knitted fabric provides high elasticity, rarely forming wrinkles. The fabric does not wrinkle easily, thus keeping its shape well, suitable for basic applications. The fabric surface is soft, breathable and quite porous to help limit dirt and increase durability when used.
Compared to other fabrics, knitted fabrics have a low thickness, but still ensure good stretch and absorbency properties. The fabric has excellent heat retention thanks to the fiber texture that enhances the air-breathing process between the surfaces.
The most popular types of knitted fabrics today
Knitted fabrics are classified based on the weaves in the surface of the fabric, including weft knits and warp knits. Weft knitting fabrics are divided into 3 main types: Rib, Single Jersey and Interlock.
+ Rib : is a fabric with 2 right sides composed of right loop columns interspersed with left loop columns, forming two layers of loop columns on two parallel planes. Rib fabric has high thickness, good elasticity and less curling like other knitted fabrics.
+ Single Jersey : is a fabric with distinctly different right and reverse sides. The right side of the fabric is composed of hoops, while the reverse side consists of rows of loops. Fabric has medium thickness, easy to curl when used.
+ Interlock has the same structure as Rib fabric, with two sides that must be similar with the right loop tie system in one layer that overlaps with the right loop column of the other layer. The fabric is smooth, has little curling and almost no stretch.
Warp knit fabrics include Tricot, Milan and Raschel fabrics.
+ Tricot is a fabric with a left side with a cystic ribbed system and a right side with longitudinal stripes that provide a soft texture, certain tempering, and high elasticity. This fabric includes models Tico, Lachelle, Milanis and Simplex, the most popular of which are Ticoto and Rasche.
+ Milan is a knitted fabric with clear longitudinal ribs on the right side and diagonal lines on the right side. The fabric is light in weight, smooth surface, stable shape, more stable and durable than other fabrics.
+ Raschel is a fabric with a rather complex structure with a system of sparse meshes, the two sides of which are similar in structure. The fabric is barely stretchy, often used as a ventilation material in fashion applications.
